Οι
απαρχές της δυτικής επιστήμης και της φιλοσοφίας που συνήθως εντοπίζονται στο
6ο αιώνα B.C.E. Ιωνία, με τον Θαλή τον Μιλήσιο και την Σχολή που ίδρυσε, του
οποίου τους περίφημους μαθητές περιλαμβάνονται όχι μόνο οι Μιλήσιοι
Αναξίμανδρος και Αναξιμένης, αλλά και του Πυθαγόρα του Σάμιου, του Βία του Πριηνέα,
του Ξενοφάνη του Κολοφώνιου , Ηράκλειτος του Εφεσίου, μεταξύ άλλων. Το συνέδριό
μας επιδιώκει να εντοπίσει τα καθοριστικά χαρακτηριστικά αυτής της νέας
επιστημονικής και φιλοσοφικής παράδοσης που γεννήθηκε, να τα συγκρίνουμε και να
τα αντιπαραβάλλουμε, και υπό το φως τους να διερευνήσουμε τι είδους γνώση
διαμόρφωσε το πλαίσιο εντός του οποίου αυτές οι νέες ιδέες και πρακτικές γνώσης
που έθεσε τα θεμέλια στα οποία στηρίχθηκε ο πολιτισμός.
Θα
διερευνήσουμε τι υπολογίζονται ως «γνώσεις», «σοφία», «αλήθεια» και «πλάνη»
στην αρχαϊκή Ελλάδα. Αυτό το υπόβαθρο περιλαμβάνει - αλλά δεν περιορίζεται σε -
«γνώσεις» σε τέχνη, την πολιτική, την αρχιτεκτονική και την οικοδόμηση, τη
στρατιωτική, τη γεωργία, και φυσικά, τη θρησκεία.
Our conference proposes to address
the preconditions of this historical phenomenon, as well as its development
until the Early Classical era, the beginning 5th century B.C.E. Why did it take
place in Ionia, and not in Sparta, or Corinth, or Athens? What role(s) did the
oriental cultures play in developing disciplines like cosmology, astronomy,
geometry, cartography? How did the Ionians develop their methods of scientific
thought? And how did they teach, preserve and disseminate their new knowledge?

συνέδριό μας έχει σκοπό να αντιμετωπίσουμε τις προϋποθέσεις αυτού του ιστορικού
φαινομένου, καθώς και την ανάπτυξη του μέχρι την Πρώιμη Κλασική εποχή, την αρχή
του 5ου αιώνα π.Χ. Γιατί συνέβη στην Ιωνία, και όχι στη Σπάρτη, ή Κόρινθο ή
Αθήνα; Τι ρόλο (ους) έπαιξαν οι ανατολικοί πολιτισμοί στην ανάπτυξη κλάδων όπως
η κοσμολογία, αστρονομία, γεωμετρία, χαρτογραφία; Πώς οι Ίωνες ανέπτυξαν

11 ‒ 14 December 2016
The origins of western science and
philosophy are customarily traced to 6th century B.C.E. Ionia, to Thales of
Miletos and the school he founded, whose famous pupils included not only the
Milesians Anaximander and Anaximenes, but also Pythagoras of Samos, Bias of
Priene, Xenophanes of Kolophon, Herakleitos of Ephesos. And Pythagoras of
Samos, among others. Our conference seeks to identify the defining marks
of this new scientific and philosophical tradition, to compare and contrast
them, and in light of them to explore what kinds of knowledge formed the
background against which these new origins represent a meaningful departure.
What counted as ‘knowledge’, ‘wisdom’, ‘truth’ and ‘fallacy’ in Archaic
Greece? This background includes ‒ but is not limited to ‒ ‘knowledge’ in
crafts, politics, architecture and building, military, agriculture, and of
course, religion.
Our conference proposes to address
